On 24 November 2014 students from the IBEM programme launched their first ever student speaker series ‘Real Talk: My Story’.

The speaker series committee comprise students from the IBEM programme namely; Shelly-Ann Gajadhar, Rocco Schenkel, Annie Fraser, Xingyue Wang and Jessica Yukie Akai-Lewis. The speaker series was initiated by this committee to promote the sharing of life experiences within the class that consists of over twenty different nationalities. It provides a forum for students to learn about the different nationalities within their class as well as about students in a more intimate way.

The topics presented were 'Confronting Misconceptions of Asian Students' by Xingyue Wang and 'Doing Sustainable Business' by Jessica Yukie Akai-Lewis. The event was attended by students, professional staff and the Student Development team and it was well received. The speakers enjoyed the opportunity given to share their experience with their classmates via public speaking and they also said that it helped with self-reflection and improvement of their presentation skills. Moreover, attendees enjoyed the event generally saying that they were happy to have a forum that allowed them to share their experiences outside of academia.

The IBEM speaker series committee hopes to host more of these events in the near future with the hope of implementing the event into other programmes within the business school.
