Before the start of the second semester I attended a Careers Bootcamp organised by the Business School’s Student Development team and the Central Careers Service. It was good to see students being given opportunities and the offer of support outside of term time.
The event was an intensive all day workshop where we learnt about what employers look for in applicants at various stages in the recruitment process. We had the opportunity to anonymously ask questions as well as receiving one to one help from the careers consultants.
We completed an exercise where we had to calculate the number of hours of work that had gone into our CVs. By the time I had added up my education, volunteering, sports, pastimes hobbies and extracurricular activities it came to over 8,000! It’s not surprising it can feel difficult to capture that effectively on just 2 pages.
As part of the workshop we worked in groups on a Mock Assessment Centre. We were observed by the Consultants and at the end received feedback on how to improve our group dynamic, the way we approach a case study as well as on our presentation skills.
I found the event incredibly useful as I received direct help from professionals on how to approach the different stages of the applications as well as how to best market myself. I feel as though I will be more confident and so able to perform better when competing for roles in the future.
I would like to thank both the Student Development Team and the Careers Service for putting together this event and would also like to encourage students to attend similar events in the future.
