The Challenge
How best to engage with 450 MSc students about an optional but extremely important subject?
Considerations
- They get bombarded with information in their first week. Don’t be too content driven.
- Make it fun.
- Make it relevant to the subjects we’ll be discussing/learning about for the rest of the year.
The Solution
The Treasure Hunt raised as many questions as it answered.
What will we ask them? Where will they go? What happens if they don’t turn up? What happens if they don’t come back? Will they just go to the pub?
Having organised the weather, we were able to breathe a sigh of relief that we weren’t casting 300 students out into the Haar (google it). The response we received from the groups was brilliant. We had 52 teams take part altogether with the Edinbros narrowly edging Victorious Secret for the best team name. Nice work ladies.
Our MSc’s are now experts on Edinburgh folklore! Please check with any of them about how to avoid being burnt as a witch, the gentleman that became Edinburgh Uni’s first female graduate or where to park if you sail to lectures.
I-create took home the award for best photo and, in the City of enlightened thinking, The Enlightened Ones were the overall winners. Please take good care of your wee-pals!
We also got to introduce the Student Development Team and begin to talk about the importance of the skills that are so vital in making the best use of the Masters qualification.
Just to prove that people were actually listening, we now have 270 of you signed up to the business cards. Please do that here if you haven’t already done so.
The student Trek to Amazon took only 30 minutes to fill.
Fortunately we also have some industry leaders prepared to come to you:
- 24/09/14 John Bernard – Global Marketing Executive – Mozilla Firefox
- 01/10/14 Aidan Dunn – Managing Director – Goldman Sachs
Both these events will be held in the auditorium at the Business School. You can find details on the website.
Amazing who you meet on an afternoon in Edinburgh!
