It’s that time of year again. The week before our new class of students arrive at the Business School, the calm before the storm…
But this year is a bit different. There’s always the buzz (and trepidation!) of welcoming 500+ new post-grads into the building, and the associated induction week activities that accompany them all, however this year I’m even more excited to be going into the new semester with an enhanced and grown Student Development team, all of us keen to meet our new students and work with you all on helping you to maximise your potential while here and beyond.
Not only are there more of us, able to work more closely with the specific programmes, but we’ve also been investing in new skills and tools for the coming year. A number of us are working towards coach accreditation, through the Association for Coaching, as well as being able to work on group dynamics through the use of the Belbin team roles report. Expect to see us use these techniques in a number of our professional development activities whilst you are here – and please do ask us about them!
We’re also still in the midst of planning events, projects and networking opportunities you’ll have whilst here, also piloting some new initiatives for this coming year and working with some really interesting alumni, businesses and recruiters – both locally and further afield – to make sure your experience on campus is as rich as possible. We’d love you to be part of this process – why don’t you comment on activities you’d like to see more of whilst in Edinburgh and we’ll see what we can do?
In the meantime, we’re putting the finishing touches on our plans for next week, and leave it to you to ponder as to why our office is currently full of multi-coloured teddy bears.
